Conclusion

The Cooler Master Musketeer 2 is certainly a fancy gadget and that's exactly what it is with all the flashy color options and dancing meters that tune into hard drive operation and sound level pressures on both the left and right audio channels.

In terms of useable functionality however, we found it lacking in contrast to the original Musketeer where one could control the casing fan speed by adjusting its input voltage and monitor temperatures in addition to the sound meter. Other than limited functionality, we still had other nitpicks such as the inability of the Musketeer 2 to recall the last used color. You might think we were asking a little too much out of a simple device, but the fact is that the fancy analog meters are hard to comprehend in red LED, which is the default color. Additionally, read-outs within each meter are not as clearly labeled like the first Musketeer. For these reasons, we are certain users would prefer other colors that are easier on the eyes.

With a slight rearrangement of the analog dials and slider controls, it is possible to even incorporate a small color switch button directly on the Cooler Master Musketeer 2 without having to resort to the other wasteful options that Cooler Master has provided. Materials used, cabling and space required could certainly have been minimized along with a reduction in overall product cost.

For those who are fond of spicing their system with cool gadgets/displays, the Cooler Master Musketeer 2 would be an ideal add-on to their visual arsenal. However for the rest of us, we might think twice before plunging into a product that could have been further refined and not to mention the limited functionality it offers in comparison to the original Musketeer. The Cooler Master Musketeer 2 is a high quality product with a huge 'cool' factor but for its estimated price point of US$40 to US$50, that's quite a sum for some fancy indicators. We would have much preferred if Cooler Master had incorporated fancy lights to the original Musketeer model, which proved to be much more useful.
